The Weight of the Wall, 2022

“The Weight of the Wall” explores the connection between present and past, drawing on themes of profound cultural and political significance. It speaks to the suffering of exile and separation, the longing for home, the confinement of the female body, and the violence of suppression.

The pile of cement bricks evokes a wall that defines the border between inside and outside—but this wall has fallen, creating a space for crossing between worlds. The heavy, sharp-edged cement bricks are shrouded in crochet, conveying the agony of being a woman in an oppressive society and the pain of exile from one’s family, while also suggesting that hope endures.

In making this work, I focused on the sense of weight and suspension, portraying what it feels like to live between two overlapping worlds—the current reality and the one held in memory—through endurance-based, feminine gestures.
