Woven Journey, 2022

Metallic Yarn, Gold Sequins, Black/White Cotton Yarn, Rock

“Woven Journey” is my emotional response to the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan. Witnessing the tragic events unfold, I felt compelled to create an artwork that captures the essence of this moment. I incorporated crochet stones from my previous project, Quest, to symbolize the complex journeys of these women.

Throughout the process, I was consumed by thoughts of Afghan women who had fought relentlessly for their freedom and rights. Watching the devastating collapse of their hard-won progress was deeply painful—not only for them but for all of us. As an artist, and as a woman who has faced challenges to women’s rights, I find it incredibly difficult to accept this reality while the question of what lies ahead for these women remains unanswered.

The pain embedded in this piece is immense, reflecting a collective sorrow as we confront the uncertainty and fear surrounding the futures of those affected by this tragedy.
